An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is a companion animal that provides comfort and support to individuals with mental health needs. Unlike service animals, ESAs do not have public access rights, but they can provide legal housing accommodations under the Fair Housing Act. I provide ESA letter services through a brief, clinically-informed assessment, which includes evaluation using the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 and discussion of how an ESA may support daily functioning and emotional well-being. In line with Illinois law, ESA letters are only issued within the context of a legitimate therapeutic relationship. Assessments for Illinois residents can be conducted in person, by phone, or via Zoom. Clients may also opt for ongoing check-ins, which establish and maintain the therapeutic relationship, provide continued support, and allow for reassessment of ESA needs. The initial assessment and ESA letter are $75, with a sliding scale available, and fees for follow-up check-ins are set fairly and can be tailored to the client’s circumstances.
I also provide ESA letters for Indiana residents. In compliance with Indiana law, all assessments for Indiana clients are conducted via Zoom to meet telehealth requirements. The process similarly includes evaluation with the GAD-7 and PHQ-9, discussion of support needs, and issuance of ESA letters only within a therapeutic context. Follow-up check-ins are available for ongoing support and reassessment as needed.
What clients will receive:
ESA letter for housing accommodations
Optional ongoing check-ins for support and reassessment
Guidance and resources to help navigate ESA-related needs
